so that others can adeptly avoid the pitfalls.
For instance, during our Safety Advisory
Committee meetings, our members are
constantly communicating about issues
they faced and how they navigated that
particular situation. Not all situations end
well, but the lessons learned are pivotal. It
causes everyone in the meeting to immediately think if they have a policy or procedure to adequately deal with whatever was
being discussed.
And then we have the additional bonus
of the contractor in question, that has
already dealt with said problem, to share
with their peers a policy or procedure that
they now developed to mitigate and/or
eliminate that speci昀椀c hazard from the
work site. Did I mention that the contractor who had the problem willingly provides
all of their peers with the solution!
Through information sharing, members
can learn what worked and what failed
for others, reducing costly trial-and-error experiences. A single lesson learned
from another contractor can save far more

than the annual membership fee with the
association.
The Power of OGCA Events
For the uninformed, an OGCA event
is simply another occasion that they
feel obligated to participate and attend.
Although the OGCA events are structured
to gather our members in one location, it is
not simply to put people in seats and have
a meal.
The OGCA facilitates events so that
our members can network, introduce and
interact more with their peers, which in
turn leads to the possibility of general
contractors collaborating in the future and
working together on Joint Ventures. The
strongest bene昀椀t to members is becoming
a known and trusted industry participant
so that when opportunities arise, your
company is already part of the conversation.
The OGCA also has an extensive network of stakeholders and is able to assist
our members in navigating who to speak
to about a speci昀椀c topic or issue wherein
the likelihood of a positive resolution has
now increased. This can be in the form of
making connections with consultants and
engineers, to suppliers, or with the actual
buyers of construction. Regardless, the
OGCA has established inroads and connections with most industry stakeholders.
The Power of Knowledge
The OGCA has also added Education as
one of its core pillars for the association
and, in turn, for its members. This
will translate into the OGCA creating a
centralized repository of courses, based on
the needs of our members, and housing
these courses in one single location for
ease of access. The association, through
the Education Committee will review
and approve the courses and populate
the categories as well as expand those
categories based on feedback and
interaction with our members.
The information in this repository
will be structured to make it easy for our
members to 昀椀nd the course, webinar, white
paper, or resource they need to adequately
ensure their workforce is as informed and
educated as possible.
Having all of this information makes
it easy to 昀椀nd what you seek and therein
facilitate the reduction of business risk.
Items housed in the repository will include,
but are not limited to: courses, legal webinars and updates, safety resources, best
practice documents, and other resources.
The Power of Reality
The true value from membership with the
OGCA comes from engagement.
The member companies that: sit on
committees; attend events regularly; share
insights openly; build relationships; and
participate in industry discussions, often
generate returns many times greater than
their membership cost through new work,
market intelligence, partnerships, and
reduced business risk.
In simple terms, a construction association is not primarily a social club—it is
a strategic business ecosystem. The more
a company contributes to that ecosystem,
the more value it tends to receive from it.
